About

I am a final year PhD student at London Metropolitan University. The objective of my thesis is to provide a critical and historical appraisal of the driving forces behind late Cold War British nuclear civil defence policies. By extrapolating and analysing the idea of policy development as a direct result of certain key factors, it seeks to develop the hypothesis that post-1972 civil defence policy making in Britain was shaped by three distinct influences - economical, ideological and external - and attempts to determine which, if any, of these influences was the primary factor underpinning the major nuclear home defence policy decisions of the time.

Other research interests include cold war nuclear history, emergency preparedness policy process and development, socio-cultural aspects of civil defence and nuclear planning, post-war public information film-making and representations of national, political and nuclear identity in pro-nuclear and defence propaganda.
