Senija’s research approach is critical theory. She is interdisciplinary cultural theory and critical tourism studies scholar with the aim to create emancipatory and interpretative knowledge through the research which can contribute to the fair, hopeful and just world. Main research interests include the discourse of management and interpretation of Ottoman Heritage in Europe, peace and tourism, i.e the role of tourism in normalisation of social relationships in the post-conflict societies, social justice and tourism; tourism generated social exclusion; tourism and nationalism; tourism and class struggle, tourism and poverty, and the interpretation of a so called ‘contested heritage’. Her main geographical research areas are West Balkans, particularly Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gernika (Guernica), Belfast, Indian provinces of Uttarachand and West Bengal.
Current research projects include the management and interpretation of Ottoman heritage in European teleology; Balkan as European 'other'; Tourism and nationalistic politics in the Balkans; Water Equity and Tourism; Gernika Peace Museum; Tourism and hospitality induced social inclusion/exclusion in the city of Belfast and (London)Derry; Events and its legacy for peace and social inclusion (a case study of Sarajevo Film Festival); Sustainable tourism development through co-operatives in India’s provinces of West Bengal and Uttarachand.
